Everyone who is familiar with pop superstar Madonna knows that she doesn’t care what anyone thinks about the way she looks or how she acts.
The “Material Girl” singer has been a provocateur ever since she stepped into the music scene. From almost getting arrested for simulating masturbation on stage to kissing Britney Spears at the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards, she always finds a way to push the envelopes.
While some people have classified the entertainer’s shenanigans as attention-seeking, her fans say she has helped women feel more liberated, embrace their sexuality and openly express it.
“Madonna is the true feminist,” author Camille Paglia said of the singer in The New York Times. “She exposes the puritanism and suffocating ideology of American feminism, which is stuck in an adolescent whining mode. She shows girls how to be attractive, sensual, energetic, ambitious, aggressive and funny – all at the same time. Through her enormous impact on young women around the world, Madonna is the future of feminism.”
These young women Paglia speaks of include Madonna’s own daughter, Lourdes Leon.
Lourdes, whose father is Madonna’s ex-boyfriend Carlos Leon, has taken after her mother in many ways, including how she expresses herself.
Like her famous mother, Lourdes has been in the headlines for daring to be different. Last year, the 22-year-old was ridiculed on social media for choosing to show off her armpit hair in a photo posted by Madonna.
“That’s just nasty lookin,” read one comment, while another user wrote “just yuck, please shave that off! I am for women’s lib, but that just looks stinky!”
Despite the overwhelmingly negative reactions, there were many people who came to Lourdes’ defense, pointing out that growing out armpit hair is not an indication of bad hygiene. The young girl was simply making a feminist statement, and giving a middle finger to society’s unrealistic expectations of women’s bodies.
Almost a year after the scandalized selfie, Lourdes is once again proving that other people’s opinions don’t affect her choices.
The University of Michigan alum had all eyes on her when she stepped out at the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund gala earlier this week.
Lourdes flaunted her unshaved armpits and hairy legs in a short white tulle dress. Despite the sheerness of the top part of the outfit, the model didn’t bother to hide her breasts.
This is the second time in two months that Lourdes has gone razor-free for an event. She made an appearance at the Gypsy Sport spring 2019 show at New York Fashion Week with armpits and legs full of hair.
Madonna made a similar statement when she was around Lourdes’ age.
“Going to high school, I saw how popular girls had to behave to get the boys. I knew I couldn’t fit into that,” the “Like a Prayer” singer said in a 2010 interview with Harper’s Bazaar. “So I decided to do the opposite. I refused to wear makeup, to have a hairstyle. I refused to shave. I had hairy armpits.”
She did it once again more recently and showed it off proudly in an Instagram selfie.
The topic of body hair has been getting a lot of attention lately, especially after Julia Roberts finally explained why she showed up at the 1999 premiere of her film Notting Hill without shaving her armpits.
“I just hadn’t really calculated my sleeve length and the waving, and how those two things would go together and reveal personal things about me,” the actress told E! News. “So it wasn’t so much a statement as it’s just part of the statement I make as a human on the planet, for myself.”
