The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has warned pet owners to check their pet food, following a pair of recalls over salmonella recalls and toxic ingredients.
While the recalls are unrelated, they’re both serious, so dog owners should check their pet food carefully.
The first recall, originally announced December 20, 2018, involved food produced by Answers Pet Food.
A sample of the food was found to contain salmonella, a bacteria that cause cause serious, sometimes deadly infections in dogs (and in people too).
Pet food makers Lystn recalled a lot of A+ Answers Straight Beef Formula for dogs from retail stores in Nebraska. While the product is not available nationwide, Lystn is still working with the FDA to locate where else it might be offered.
In the meantime, the following product should not be fed to pets:

Toxic Ingredients Recall
Multiple other brands of pet food are being recalled over concerns they contain dangerous levels of vitamin D. In large doses, the vitamin can be toxic to animals, causing kidney failure and other serious reactions.
Drooling, vomiting, lethargy, and loss of appetite are all signs of a toxic reaction.
Here are brands and lot numbers listed by the FDA as part of the recall:

All pet owners should be aware that spotting tainted dog food is not as easy as sniffing out spoiled human food. Usually, there’s no change in pet food’s taste or smell, even when it’s carrying bacteria that could make you, your pet, or your family ill.
Throw away any recalled pet food in a secure container to keep animals from eating it out of the trash.
Take any animals who show signs of illness (vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, loss of appetite, fatigue) after eating pet food to the vet right away. You should also clean their feces out of your yard or public parks to prevent other animals from getting sick.
