Standing nearly a head taller than his peers, with torso-length hair, a nose piercing, a wide-brimmed hat, and a sleeve of tattoos on his right arm, Logan Staats is the complete opposite of what you’d expect the winner of a TV singing competition to look like. Then again, The Launch isn’t exactly your typical singing competition.
Premiering on CTV and featuring an all-star panel of judges, the show aims to give unsigned artists their big shot at recording a hit single, and launching their career in popular music (see what they did there?). This week’s panel included Executive Producer and President/CEO of Big Machine Label Group, Scott Borchetta (Taylor Swift, Florida Georgia Line), writer/producer busbee (Rascal Flatts, Lady Antebellum, P!nk), and country music superstar Shania Twain.
Logan immediately impressed the judges before he even started singing, thanks to his effortlessly cool folk-rock persona and his deep connection to his Native heritage. Born on the Six Nations of the Grand River Reserve and raised in the town of Brantford, ON, he received his first guitar from his father and has since taught himself not only how to play, but also how to sing.
His humble beginnings and love for his family really seem to have made a mark on his music, as Logan blew everyone away with his deep, soulful voice and commanding presence. It made him an instant shoe-in to move onto the second round, in which artists record and ultimately do a live performance of a song written by busbee himself, along with co-writers Bleta Rexha, Maureen “MoZella” McDonald, Justin Franks, Casper & B.
The only other person to make it through the first round was 14-year-old Vivian Hicks, an aspiring pop singer with tons of social media followers and a desire to perform just like her idols Fifth Harmony, Bruno Mars, and Meghan Trainor. You couldn’t ask for two more diametrically opposed singers.
Competition was tight, but ultimately it was Logan’s powerful, rocking rendition of the song “The Lucky Ones” that sealed the deal. Shania Twain said it best during the final round of the competition, when she commented: “When you started to sing, in that moment, you just sang like there was nothing else in the world.”
Logan’s first single, “The Lucky Ones,” is now available everywhere. You can also follow him on Twitter and Instagram.
The Launch airs Wednesdays at 9 PM on CTV. For more information, feel free to check out the show’s official website.
